There is a constant need to have individuals who have a talent for the sport of shooting, and are passionate about the game, the identified talents are included in the national team for appropriate talent training and increase participation in the sport.
For individuals interested in progressing to the next level of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF). Pistol Australia identifies individuals that meet the requirement to be part of Australia’s national team, the talents are developed to proceed to the next stage of Shooting Australia Commonwealth Games and ultimately the Olympic Games Teams.
The development squad have series of program to enhance the development of individuals. The program of the national squad will provide:
Participants in the national team are matched with mentors who have excelled in the sport of pistol shooting. Most mentors provided are Olympic medallists, individuals who have gone ahead to become one of the best in the sport of pistol shooting in Australia and even beyond.
Coaches are one of the most important requirements to have a successful career in shooting sport. The coaches provided for those involved in the states and national programs are high level and profile coaches with outstanding achievements in managing various teams and have been to gather experience to increase the performance of a team.
The coaches as well go through a rigorous educational and training program under the supervision of the National Coaching Council.
Individuals who have gone ahead to be part of the national team are provided with a rigorous training process. The training program is broken down into weekly training activities that are tailored for each individual. The training programs include methods of increasing the strength of each trainee as well as skills advancement.
Training camps are provided at the Australian Institute of Sport to facilitate intensive coaching for the sport participants. The training camps are kept open throughout the year to continue training support for the entire season of sport shooting. Training under close supervision is provided at the training camps.
Various advancement has been made in the field of sport shooting, science and research have provided best method and approach of optimizing training process and development. The science support is meant to advance the performance of players at the elite level including at international competitions and championship games.

The national development squad is supported by Pistol Australia who oversees the advancement of target shooters from the basic level to the elite levels.
