The law guides to promote the safe and responsible use of firearms, provide a national approach that limits the kind of firearm to be possessed and used. This act is enacted by making sure everyone that possesses a firearm is licensed to do so, and such an individual is also registered.

The legislation for firearms in Australia also provides guidelines for a person who bears a firearm to use at a shooting range and other designated places.

Queensland

Queensland provides the licence for an individual to operate a firearm, and also a permit to acquire a firearm. When a permit is applied for, it must be backed by a licence to operate a firearm.

The law in Queensland requires a genuine reason to be issued a firearm, and also justify the acquisition of a new firearm.

For individuals that belong to a shooting club, are required to present a letter or certificate from their shooting club that indicates membership and the type of firearm that is approved for use at the shooting club’s range.

A genuine reason has to be provided in New South Wales for an individual who wants to participate in Target Shooting activities and must show proof of membership of an approved Target Shooting Club.

A Target Shooting Club must also be authorised for target shooting and also approval to conduct competitions and activities that involves the use of firearms. There are also different categories of firearms; A, B, C etc, the category of firearm an individual is applying for has to be within the category of firearm approved by the club for use.

Northern Territory

Firearms are licensed and regulated by the commissioner of Police and CEO of Fire and Emergency Services in the Northern Territory.

In the case of a person obtaining a licence and permit, you must be at least 18 years (12 years for junior licence), proof of residency and identity. The individual must not at any point be subject to domestic violence in the past 5 years.

South Australia

In South Australia, in addition to the regular requirement, an applicant for a firearm licence has to complete a course in the safe handling, carriage and usage of a firearm to a satisfactory level of the Registrar. The courses are both written and practical with examinations.

Tasmania

The Tasmania authority grants a person the licence to bear arms if such a person meets certain criteria such as meeting the age criteria of 18 years, a fit and proper person, a natural person, and has satisfactorily completed an approved firearms safety course.

Victoria

Firearms are regulated by the Licensing and Regulation Division of Victoria Police. Firearms must be registered with the police, and a permit to acquire as well. The appropriate firearm licence is required to carry and use as well.

Western Australia

In addition to the basic criteria of obtaining a firearm, an applicant for a firearm licence must complete a Firearms Awareness Test at an approved firearm association.
