Disciplines

Discipline in target shooting refers to competitions. There are different forms, of competitions carried out for the sport of target shooting, from national to international competitions.

ISSF

International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) is the only organisation recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to govern amateur international shooting sports competitions. ISSF target pistol shooting events include:

  • 10m Air Pistol (Men and Women): 10m Air pistol is part of ISSF events shot by both men and women, at different levels of competition including the Olympics and Paralympics.
  • 50m Pistol: The event is shot at all levels of competition including the Olympics and Paralympics using .22 calibre single-shot pistols.
  • 25M Pistol Women and Men’s Sport Pistol: In the international discipline, 25m Pistol is shot by women in Olympics, and including the Paralympics by men and women, and by juniors at the World Championships.
  • 25M Centre Fire Pistol: 25m Centre Fire Pistol is one of the ISSF shooting events and it is shot by men alone at the international level. In Australia, this event is also organized for women in most competition.
  • 25M Rapid Fire Pistol: For 25m Rapid Fire Pistol semi-automatic pistols in .22 calibre (5.6mm) are used at all levels of competition including the Olympics.
  • 25m Standard Pistol: This is one of the ISSF shooting events introduced at the World Championship level. In Australia, it is also shot by women in most competitions

PA Matches

  • Service Pistol: The Service Pistol event involves firing shots up to the number of 90. The firing distance is varied up to 7 yards with a holstered pistol at the commencement of each series.
  • Service Pistol Unrestricted: Calibres allowed for this event are ·32 to ·38 and has the same course of fire as for Service Pistol, the only difference is the disuse of holstered pistols at the commencement of each series.
  • Service Pistol 25 yards: This event is for calibres from ·32 to ·38/·357 pistols consist of 65 shots fired at distances ranging from 25 to 7 yards.
  • 25m Black Powder: The 25m Black Powder event combines both precisions and rapid-fire, in two stages with 20 shots each.
  • 50m Black Powder: The 50m Black Powder event is based on the design of the ISSF 50m Pistol match but reduced to 40 shots.

WA 1500 Match

150-Shot events: The following are used, a Revolver 1500 – open class revolver and a Pistol 1500 – open class pistol.

60-Shot events: The 60-shot events involve a distinguished pistol match, distinguished revolver match and Open Match pistol or revolver.

48-Shot events: In this event a Standard Revolver 4″ Match and a Standard Revolver 2.75″ Match, both involving a .38 calibre. However, these revolvers are not permitted under Australian Law.

Action Pistol

In Australia, Action Pistol consists of four courses of fire shot. The four courses are:

  • Falling Plates: The plates are shot at 10, 15, 20 & 25 yards with a maximum time allowed.
  • The Mover: The target moves from behind a barricade, moves for 6 seconds and disappear.
  • The Practical: It has 4 stages (10, 15, 25 and 50 yards) and the competitor is required to shoot with a weak hand.
  • The Barricade: The competitor is required to fire 6 shots from one side of the barricade at one target and then 6 shots from the opposite side.

Metallic Silhouette

Metallic Silhouette is designed to take place in the form of shooting at metallic targets, the metal cut-outs are in the shape of animals (Chicken, Ram, Turkey etc) The shooting involves changing the scales and distance of the target from the competitor as required by the match. The arms involved in metallic silhouette include handguns, rifles, airguns etc.
